Fortunately for you, you’re not the only one in the world trying to beat bad habits and make room for good, healthy habits. Tips, motivational quotes, and more are plastered online for those of us that need help with kicking bad habits to the curb.

Not going to lie, that’s an eerie quote. The thing is, while we’re here to help you, we’re not here to sugarcoat things either. Here’s the truth bomb: If you allow your bad habits to continue, they will eventually define you.

5 Tips For Beating Bad Habits

Tip #1: Review your routine and identify habits.

The only way you can tackle habits is by figuring out what they are. Sit down with a notebook and run through a normal day in your mind. On the left side of the notebook page, write down your healthy (or non-harmful) habits. On the right side of the notebook page, write down your bad (or harmful) habits. 

Why It Helps: Sometimes we go about our day acting on habits without realizing it. Making a list that differentiates the good habits from the bad ones helps you practice mindfulness.


Tip #2: Identify what triggers those habits. 

Habits happen like clockwork, and sometimes those habits are triggered by something. Here’s an example: Susan hasn’t picked up a cigarette in three months. As far as friends and family know, it’s been a year. Three months ago though, her car broke down 2 miles away from the house and she stress-smoked as a result. 

Why It Helps: Getting acquainted with what causes you to act on your habits is like Kryptonite. You know what the “weakness” is and that will help you find solutions to beat those habits. 


Tip #3: Fill in the blank.

“I could use more of _____________.” What do you need? More funds? More groceries? More affection?

Why It Helps: This Fill in the Blank prompt helps in so many ways, not just when it comes to your habits. You’re forced to think about what you’re trying to compensate for and can try to tackle the habit at the root of your worries. 

Pro-tip: This prompt ties into self-care. Try making self-care a daily habit that replaces your bad habits.

 

Tip #4: Set an incentive for yourself.

A reward-based system seems so old school, but it’s effective! You’re holding yourself accountable to follow through and rewarding yourself for a job well-done. 

Why It Helps: Rewarding yourself should be a common practice. You deserve that form of self-care after a long stretch of fighting bad habits.
